Ever find that one of your old book cases is missing one or more of the steel shelf clips or pegs that hold up the shelves? These are the same types of clips that hold up shelves in some kitchen cabinets. Yes, it happens to all of us, and no one knows where these clips go, or why they went in the first place. Finding replacement clips is easy. Head off to your local hardware or building supply store, and they usually have these in stock. However, there are multiple sizes, so be sure to take one of the remaining pegs to the store with you.
An inexpensive and easy alternative is to keep dowels of several sizes handy. They are fairly inexpensive, and easy to cut to size. Simply trim a 1" piece of dowel and try inserting into the peg holes. Once you find the right size and have filled 4 holes (at the same height, of course), then simply set the shelf back on top and you're good to go.
One more note. If you can get the oak dowels, they will support more weight.
